Stop Trying to “Stay Calm” — Use These 10 Assertive Phrases at Your IEP Meeting

IEP meetings are not about being polite.

They are about ensuring your child receives a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

You can be respectful.
And still be direct.

You can be calm.
And still be clear.

These are the phrases that shift the room.

1. “Can you show me where that is documented?”

If it’s not written, it doesn’t exist.

2. “I have documentation that shows something different.”

You are not guessing. You are bringing receipts.

3. “How does this meet my child’s unique needs?”

This brings it back to the law.

4. “What data supports that decision?”

No data = no decision.

5. “If this is being denied, I’m requesting Prior Written Notice.”

This is leverage.

6. “Who has the authority to approve this?”

Stops the delay tactics.

7. “I’m not comfortable moving forward without addressing this.”

You control the pace.

8. “What alternatives do you suggest to meet this need?”

Forces solutions.

9. “How will this be implemented and tracked?”

Compliance means nothing without implementation.

10. “Let’s document that this concern was raised and not resolved.”

This is how cases are built.

You are not “difficult.”

You are informed.

You are not “emotional.”

You are advocating for your child.

And if the room shifts when you speak like this?

That’s not a problem.

That’s accountability.
